Why Zyz? A trip through the names of Palermo

VisitZyz nasce dall’idea di rendere omaggio alla storia antica e affascinante della città. Palermo è una città ricca di cultura e tradizioni, e il suo nome, che è cambiato nel corso dei millenni, riflette le diverse civiltà che l’hanno dominata e influenzata. Qui vi racconto perché ho scelto  “Zyz” e vi guido attraverso i vari nomi che Palermo ha avuto nel corso della sua lunga storia.

Zyz: il primo nome di Palermo

Palermo ha origini molto antiche, esistono cenni che dimostrano la presenza umana già nella preistoria. 

Non è possibile definire con certezza una data di fondazione della città. È noto che i primi a stabilirsi furono i Sicani, i Cretesi e gli Elim, ma una data di fondazione di Palermo risale al 734 a.C. con i Fenici i quali, grandi commercianti, stabilirono una colonia che chiamarono Mabbonath. Data la posizione strategica per gli scambi commerciali divenne una delle città più importanti al centro del Mediterraneo, il nome della città divenne “Zyz”.

Il nome “Zyz” è legato dunque alle origini più antiche di Palermo. Durante l’VIII secolo a.C., i Fenici, popolo di grandi navigatori e commercianti, chiamarono questa città “Zyz”, un termine che in fenicio significa “fiore” o “splendente”. Questo nome non fu scelto a caso: i Fenici volevano evocare l’immagine di una città fiorente, prospera e bella, proprio come un fiore che sboccia. Inoltre fiore si riferisce anche alla forma che dall’alto aveva la città. 

“Zyz” non è solo un nome, ma un simbolo di ciò che Palermo rappresentava in quei tempi antichi: un crocevia di culture, un centro di scambio e commercio, e una città vibrante e viva. Oggi, utilizzando questo nome, desidero evocare la stessa bellezza e vitalità che i Fenici avevano visto in questa terra, offrendo ai visitatori un’esperienza autentica e radicata nella storia.

Panormus: la città “tutta porto”

Con l’arrivo dei Greci, e poi dei Romani, Palermo cambiò nome diventando “Panormus”. Questo nome, derivato dal greco “πᾶς” (pas) che significa “tutto” e “ὅρμος” (hormos) che significa “porto”, si riferiva alla geografia unica della città. Palermo, infatti, è situata in una vasta baia naturale, con il mare che si insinua profondamente nell’entroterra, rendendola un porto naturale perfetto per il commercio e la navigazione.

“Panormus” divenne uno dei più importanti centri della Sicilia sotto il dominio romano, grazie alla sua posizione strategica e alla sua capacità di accogliere navi di ogni tipo. Il nome “Panormus” è quindi un omaggio alla funzione che Palermo ha svolto per secoli: un porto accogliente e sicuro per coloro che navigavano nel Mediterraneo.

Balarm e Balermus: Palermo sotto il dominio arabo e normanno

Nel IX secolo, gli Arabi conquistarono la Sicilia e portarono con sé una nuova cultura e un nuovo nome per Palermo, la chiamarono “Balarm” e successivamente i Normanni  le diedero il nome “Balermus”. Questi nomi, di origine araba e normanna, rappresentano una corruzione dell’antico “Panormus” e riflette l’importanza che la città aveva per i nuovi conquistatori.

Sotto il dominio arabo, Palermo divenne la capitale dell’Emirato di Sicilia e conobbe un periodo di grande sviluppo culturale, economico e architettonico. La città fu arricchita da giardini, palazzi e moschee, e divenne un centro di sapere e cultura. Il nome “Balarm” evoca dunque un’epoca di splendore e di connessione con il mondo arabo e islamico.

Palermo: il nome moderno e la sua evoluzione

Nella versione contemporanea la città prende il nome di “Palermo”, una versione latinizzata di “Panormus” che riflette l’influenza cristiana e occidentale. Da allora, il nome “Palermo” ha resistito ai secoli e ai cambiamenti, mantenendo viva la memoria delle sue antiche origini.

Oggi, Palermo è una città che porta con sé tutte le tracce delle civiltà che l’hanno attraversata: fenicia, greca, romana, araba, normanna e molte altre. Ogni nome che la città ha avuto è una testimonianza della sua ricca e complessa storia.

Scegliere “Zyz” è stato un modo per connettermi con le radici più profonde di Palermo e per offrire ai visitatori un’esperienza che vada oltre la semplice ospitalità. “Zyz” rappresenta la bellezza, la vitalità e la storia che rendono Palermo una città unica al mondo. Zyz: the first name of Palermo

Palermo has very ancient origins, with evidence of human presence dating back to prehistory.

It is not possible to determine a precise founding date for the city. It is known that the first to settle were the Sicani, the Cretans, and the Elimi, but a founding date for Palermo goes back to 734 BC, when the Phoenicians, great merchants, established a colony they called Mabbonath. Due to its strategic position for trade exchanges, it became one of the most important cities in the Mediterranean, and the name of the city became “Zyz.”

The name “Zyz” is thus tied to the oldest origins of Palermo. During the 8th century BC, the Phoenicians, a people of great sailors and traders, named this city “Zyz,” a term in Phoenician that means “flower” or “radiant.” This name was not chosen by chance: the Phoenicians wanted to evoke the image of a flourishing, prosperous, and beautiful city, just like a blooming flower. Additionally, “flower” also refers to the shape of the city when viewed from above.

“Zyz” is not just a name, but a symbol of what Palermo represented in those ancient times: a crossroads of cultures, a center for exchange and commerce, and a vibrant and lively city. Today, by using this name, I wish to evoke the same beauty and vitality that the Phoenicians saw in this land, offering visitors an authentic experience rooted in history.

Panormus: the city “all port”

With the arrival of the Greeks, and later the Romans, Palermo changed its name to “Panormus.” This name, derived from the Greek “πᾶς” (pas), meaning “all,” and “ὅρμος” (hormos), meaning “harbor,” referred to the city’s unique geography. Palermo is located in a vast natural bay, with the sea extending deeply into the inland, making it a perfect natural harbor for trade and navigation.

“Panormus” became one of the most important centers of Sicily under Roman rule, due to its strategic location and its ability to accommodate ships of all kinds. The name “Panormus” is therefore a tribute to the role Palermo has played for centuries: a welcoming and safe port for those navigating the Mediterranean.

Balarm and Balermus: Palermo under Arab and Norman rule

In the 9th century, the Arabs conquered Sicily and brought with them a new culture and a new name for Palermo, calling it “Balarm,” which was later changed by the Normans to “Balermus.” These names, of Arab and Norman origin, represent a corruption of the ancient “Panormus” and reflect the importance that the city had for the new conquerors.

Under Arab rule, Palermo became the capital of the Emirate of Sicily and underwent a period of great cultural, economic, and architectural development. The city was enriched with gardens, palaces, and mosques, becoming a center of knowledge and culture. The name “Balarm” evokes a period of splendor and a connection with the Arab and Islamic world.

In the contemporary version, the city is called “Palermo,” a Latinized version of “Panormus” that reflects Christian and Western influence. Since then, the name “Palermo” has endured through the centuries and changes, keeping alive the memory of its ancient origins.

Today, Palermo is a city that carries the traces of all the civilizations that have passed through it: Phoenician, Greek, Roman, Arab, Norman, and many others. Each name the city has had is a testimony to its rich and complex history.
